About

BETTY'S PLACE Mt Wilhelm

Betty's Place is situated at 2790 m above sea level just under PNG's highest peak, Mt Wilhelm at 4509m in Simbu Province. Betty's Place is a small holding that consists of a tourist lodge, a trout farm, orchid cultivation, vegetable gardening and animal husbandry.

About Us

We are a family run business, dedicated to the development of the Mt Wilhelm area namely tourism, agriculture and trout farming. We have been in the area since 1987 and are passionate about working closely with the surrounding community, employing local people to work on the farm and as guides and porters on trekking and hiking adventures. Our aim is to promote what our beautiful country has to offer.

History

Betty's Place is owned and operated by Betty Higgins and family. She along with her late husband, Ken Higgins, bought and built up the property in 1987. The business started as an agricultural venture, producing and selling vegetables. Betty then branched out into farming rainbow trout in 1993 followed by the establishment of the lodge in 1996. Her previous experience as a stewardess for Air Niugini has given her the insight on how to make travelers and tourists feel right at home. In 2009 she was nominated for the Westpac Women in Business Awards (which recognised the outstanding contribution that women are making to the development of the nation), emerging as the overall winner of both that and the Daltron Entrepreneur Award. Betty has also won the Secretary of State (Hillary Clinton) International Woman of Courage award in recognition of exceptional devotion and hard work in providing livelihoods to numerous families in a remote, underdeveloped area of PNG.
Her determination and drive to continue her business venture in one of the most remote parts of PNG makes her a truly remarkable lady. She is a pillar of support in the local communities and strives to promote the best the country has to offer. Betty has since remarried and together with her husband Peter, continue to strive in a place that is not very far from an untouched paradise.
